Discovering Your Wisdom Teeth: To Remove or Not to Remove?

June 10, 2024

Wisdom teeth, the third molars at the back of our mouths, are a fascinating part of human evolution. As we've evolved over time, our jaws have become smaller and our brains larger, which has led to less space for these late-blooming teeth. This change in anatomy can result in a variety of dental issues that may require the removal of your wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth are the last permanent teeth to develop in the oral cavity and typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25 years. Due to their late arrival, they often face challenges when it comes to finding enough space to erupt properly. In many cases, these teeth become impacted or partially erupted, leading to a range of potential problems.

While some people may never develop wisdom teeth at all, others may have fewer than four or even extra ones. When they do emerge, they can cause discomfort and pose risks to the surrounding teeth and tissues. According to the American Dental Association, approximately 85% of people will need to have their wisdom teeth removed.

At our dental practice, we closely monitor the development, positioning, and health of your wisdom teeth during routine checkups. We assess whether they have enough room to emerge correctly, align with adjacent teeth, and do not pose a threat to your overall oral health. If your wisdom teeth are causing issues or are at risk of becoming problematic in the future, we may recommend extraction.

Wisdom tooth extractions can be performed in our office or by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, depending on the complexity of the case. Our dedicated staff will work with you to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience throughout the process.

If you're experiencing discomfort or concerns about your wisdom teeth, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at the office of Hanhan Dental. We're here to help you make informed decisions about your oral health and ensure a bright, healthy smile for years to come.
